Welcome to another glowing Beauty Loves Me blog! As promised in our previous blog, we assured you that our blogs will be relatable and personal. I trust that this is one that everyone can relate to, hence our trademark #whocanrelate™. Dry and dehydrated skin is no laughing matter, especially when caused by something we can’t control such as the changing of the seasons. As a skincare professional, I know just how important it is to take care of your skin throughout the year. Our skin is constantly exposed to environmental factors that can impact on its health and appearance as seasons change. From the scorching heat of summer to the chilly winds of winter, each season brings its own set of challenges to our skin. Have no fear, as with the right knowledge and tools, you can keep your skin healthy and glowing all year round. In this blog; I'll discuss the effects of seasonal changes on our skin, with focus on the current changes.
It is important to get professional advice on skin treatments as the seasons change. Equip yourself with knowledge about proper skincare routines, treatments, and products to maintaining healthy-looking skin. Learn about protecting the skin during extreme weather conditions; common mistakes to avoid; and recommended professional skincare services.
Effect of summer transitioning to winter Summer often brings with it high humidity, which can lead to excess oil production and breakouts. The sun's harmful UV rays also cause damage to our skin leading to premature ageing and an increased risk of
skin cancer. Autumn brings cooler temperatures and drier air, which can lead to dry, flaky skin which is what we are seeing now. Winter is especially harsh on the skin, with cold temperatures and low humidity levels causing dryness, itchiness, and worsened cases of eczema.
The importance of proper skincare routines for healthy skin
Fortunately, we can mitigate the effects of dry air on the skin but note there is no one-size-fits-all solution. An appropriate skincare routine is essential for maintaining healthy skin all year round.
This should include cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and protecting the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. In the summer, it's important to use a lightweight moisturizer and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF. In the winter, a heavier, more emollient moisturizer is necessary to combat dryness, coupled with lipids and ceramides to produce the correct balance of lipids and renew the skin.
This will also protect it from the harsh environment by retaining hydration.
If you have oily skin, use a light moisturizer, don't skip it entirely. It's also important to exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. Regular skin analysis by a professional skin therapist is highly recommended to received proper advice for your skin type, whether it is for home care or in-salon treatments.
In-salon treatments
Our skin types may vary but most of our skins lose hydration and becomes dry, dehydrated and in need of a good exfoliation. My personal favorite treatment ahead of winter are peels and micro-needling. The reason is simple; both these treatments are great exfoliants, rid the skin of dead skin cells, stimulate collagen production (which helps new cells grow). You will have the benefits of evenly toned skin and an elasticized skin texture. With proper care and quality products, you will have a healthy, glowing complexion.
